Paying in cash is inconvenient. That’s why more and more people are paying by card or using payment services like Apple Pay – online, of course, but also at the corner store. This makes paying quick and easy everywhere. But these services also have some disadvantages. The companies behind them often know a lot about who uses their services and how. And, a big problem for the European Union, US companies are very strong.
The EU and the European Central Bank are therefore currently working on a digital euro. It should be easy to use, work throughout the EU and require much less monitoring. But how exactly would it work? What would the EU know about what I buy? And would it mean the end of cash? Banks, companies and politicians are currently discussing this.
