Generative text AI in education: Help and hindrance?

ZEVEDI event on the occasion of the Digitaltag 2024

7 June 2024, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. CEST

The ability of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to access and process large amounts of knowledge raises fundamental questions – also in the field of education. Routine tasks can be automated, texts and tasks can be generated at the touch of a button. The possibilities: Can teachers devote more time to their students? Can AI be used to personalise the learning process? The challenges: Will AI prevent students from learning independently? How can teachers monitor and assess student learning? What happens to the collected data?

On the occasion of the national Digitaltag on Friday 7 June 2024, the Centre Responsible Digitality (ZEVEDI) is organising a public panel discussion to discuss these questions. The topic will be introduced by a video documentation of a ZEVEDI conference where the impact of AI text generators on science will be discussed from different perspectives. The panel will take up these statements in order to illuminate them in the context of school education. Discussion on the panel: Prof Dr Gerhard Schreiber (theologian, Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg), Prof Dr Iryna Gurevych (computer scientist, TU Darmstadt / hessian.AI) and Dr Ludger Fittkau (freelance journalist and teacher). The event will be moderated by Karen Fuhrmann from Hessischer Rundfunk.
