Warum Bitcoin?

eFin & Democracy: Public Lecture & Discussion

26 July 2022, Technische Universität Darmstadt

Crypto stocks and their decline on the market have increasingly become the focus of public interest for a few weeks now. Fittingly, the first Mercator Journalist in Residence, Friedemann Brenneis, will present his field of interest with a talk. Among other things, the freelance journalist reports on Bitcoin as a phenomenon between blockchain and crypto culture in his blog The Coinspondent and in the podcast Honigdachs. Bitcoin is a controversial topic even among experts: Some consider it a bubble, a waste or even a scam. Others see it as a new technology, a necessary social development and consider it to be perhaps the most important and influential invention of modern times. This public lecture for interested beginners and advanced learners explains why Bitcoin came into being, why it has not yet disappeared and why we will probably be dealing with it for a long time to come.

The lecture will be held in German.
Please note that masks are required in the rooms of the TU Darmstadt.
Registration is not required.

Tuesday, 26. Juli 2022, 16:00 – 18:00 CEST

Basic legal frameworks are analysed and their practical implementation is discussed at various levels. A particular emphasis is placed on quality assurance of AI applications in the financial sector, the challenges of which are investigated from a practical and theoretical perspective.

Thursday, 7 July 2022, 9:00 – 17:00 CEST
Congresscentrum Villa Vita, Marburg

The conference will be held in German.

Registration for participation on-site is open until 5 July 2022. A conference fee will be charged for catering.

The Philosophy of Data Science: Data Science Governance

Conference

10 and 11 June 2022
online and at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management

The conference “The Philosophy of Data Science: Data Science Governance” hosted by the project group Regulatory Theories of Artificial Intelligence brings together researchers from ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of science to discuss questions surrounding the governance of data science.

The guiding question is how to conduct, design and regulate data science for the public good. This topic is explored by looking at a range of different domains and their respective challenges. Which tailor-made solutions might be required and against which legal, moral and epistemic norms and ideals can they be justified?

  • Friday, 10 June 2022, 10:00 – 18:00 CEST
  • Saturday, 11 June 2022, 9:00 – 17:00 CEST

Hybrid event with the possibility of both in-person and online attendance.

Registration closes on 3 June 2022. Please register here».

Die Normativität nachhaltiger Digitalität

Conference

5 and 6 May 2022, University of Kassel

The interdisciplinary conference “Die Normativität nachhaltiger Digitalität” hosted by the project group Sustainable Intelligence – Intelligent Sustainability is dedicated to the tensions between sustainable development and digitality from a normative perspective that aims at the possibilities and challenges of sustainable digitality. A special focus is on the normativity of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – i.e. the normative images that are hidden in them and explicitly or implicitly transport certain ideas regarding the malleability or transformability of society. Questions of production and consumption, of legal responsibility for innovation and of technical design principles will be addressed.

  • Thursday, 5 May 2022, 14:00 – 18:00 CEST
  • Friday, 6 May 2022, 9:00 – 13:30 CEST

The conference will be held in German and take place at the Gießhaus of University of Kassel. Registration until 22 April 2022 via iteg[at]uni-kassel.de.

“For whom does this fail?” Bewertungsmaßstäbe von und für Algorithmen

Workshop

24 January 2022, 9:00 – 13:00 CET

The workshop “‘For whom does this fail?’ Bewertungsmaßstäbe von und für Algorithmen”, hosted by ZEVEDI project group Diffusion of Responsibility through Algorithms explores the question of which values algorithmic recommendations are based on and which possibilities are available to subject these foundations to a critical evaluation. Topics are, on the one hand, informatic evaluation standards for the assessment of algorithms, and on the other hand, the development of a digital platform that allows those affected by algorithmic decisions to challenge them. A guiding question will be for whom or in which cases algorithms fail and what can be learned from this about the mode of algorithmic recommendation.

The workshop will take place online via Zoom.

Algorithms – Between Trust and Control

Digital lecture series

summer semester 2021

During this summer semester, research centre Normative Orders of Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main offers a digital lecture series. Talks highlight problems of control and trust in the context of algorithm-based decisions and evaluations. Both convenors of the series are members of ZEVEDI: Prof. Indra Spiecker gen. Döhmann, who is spokesperson of project group Diffusion of Responsibility through Algorithms and Prof. Christoph Burchard, who is member of the same group.

11 Oktober 2021, 9:30 – 17:00 CET

The conference “Datensouveränität: Probleme und Gestaltungschancen” by ZEVEDI project group Data Sovereignty explores (mis)understandings of the term and discusses its viability with a broad audience and selected experts. Is the concept of data sovereignty a theoretically and practically appropriate response to the challenges of digitality? And how can it be linked to other governance strategies of the digital society?

Akteure algorithmisch vorbereiteter Entscheidungen

Workshop

25 October 2021, 8:00 – 11:30 CET

The workshop “Akteure algorithmisch vorbereiteter Entscheidungen” hosted by ZEVEDI project group Diffusion of Responsibility through Algorithms deals with the question of which actors shape the development and use of algorithms and which possibilities of regulation exist in this respect. The influence of different actors is discussed with selected experts and the distribution of responsibility and liability for the use of algorithms are debated.

This workshop took place online via Zoom.
