The tokenization of assets is a cross-border phenomenon that raises legal issues, which were explored by the ZEVEDI project group Tokenized Finance (ToFi) . These issues are always considered within the context of the increasing internationalization or transnationalization of cryptocurrency trading.
As part of the comparative legal research, various legal systems worldwide were analyzed to capture the global perspective of tokenization comprehensively. The accompanying fellowship program facilitated an intense exchange with the legal systems of the USA (primarily New York and Florida), Italy, Portugal, Poland, Austria, and Singapore. The selection of these target countries was based on ongoing legislative and academic activities in those regions. The program included both knowledge transfer through lectures and workshops, as well as contributions to the ToFi edited volume, which features several contributions from fellows in the participating countries. The key results of the project are the insights gained from collaboration with international legal systems, which not only contributed to academic discussions but were also documented in numerous lectures and publications, particularly in the ToFi volume. These contributions form a central part of the scientific exploration of asset tokenization in an international context.

Tokenisierung und Finanzmarkt (ToFi)
Edited Volume | January 2025
The legally secure linking of assets with blockchain tokens (tokenization) is a key area of innovation and application for blockchain technology. On the financial markets, this phenomenon appears as Tokenized Finance (ToFi). The contributions in this collection cover not only the technical foundations of tokenization, but also important fundamental issues in German and EU law as well as matters of comparative law covering Singapore, Portugal, Austria, Italy and the USA.
The book, published by Mohr Siebeck in the series ‘Schriften zum Recht der Digitalisierung’ and arising from the ZEVEDI project group Tokenized Finance (ToFi), is available as open access and provides an important contribution to the current discussion on the future of the financial markets and the role of tokenisation.
